71st Doncaster Scouts: Journey to Bosnia 2027
About us
In July 1995, more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed in and around Srebrenica. Some were no older than the young people in our Scout group.
Thirty years on, our Scouts are going to Bosnia and Herzegovina to listen, to learn and to give.
We are the 71st Doncaster Hunafa Scout Group, and this is a charity expedition. Together, our Scouts are raising £10,000 for Bosnia Trust to support families who still live with the consequences of that war. They’ll stand where it happened, hear from those who survived it, and carry those stories home.
Scouting teaches young people to know their place in the world and to live by the Scout Law. A Scout is to be trusted, is loyal, has courage in all difficulties, and has self-respect and respect for others. Our values of integrity, respect, care, belief and co-operation are easy to say. This expedition is where our young people will live them.
They will return different. More grateful, more aware, and more determined to stand up for what is right.
Why Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Because the people of Bosnia lived through horrors most of us can’t imagine, and they didn’t let go of their faith. They lost homes, families and futures, and still they rebuilt. We want our young people to see that kind of faith up close: not in a textbook, but in the faces of the people who lived it.
Where does your money go?
Our £10,000 target will fund Bosnia Trust's work in three areas:
* Education: giving young children a strong start. Your donation helps fund a kindergarten teacher in Sarajevo and free transport so children can get to school.
* Sustainable livelihoods: helping families stand on their own feet with greenhouses, cows, a chicken farm, and seeds, so they can grow their own food for years to come.
* Remembrance: keeping the memory of Srebrenica alive so that the lessons of genocide are never forgotten, and helping young people understand why that matters.
This is not a one-off gift. A child who gets to school, or a family that can feed itself season after season, is giving that keeps on giving.
We ask Allah to accept our deeds, and those of our young people, as Sadaqah Jariyah, and to make them weigh heavy on the scale of good. Ameen.
