Every Step Counts: My Journey to Support Bosnia's Vulnerable

Salaam everyone,
This July 2026, in sha Allah, I will be walking the Annual Peace March (Marš mira) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Peace March retraces the route of the "death march" of July 1995, when thousands of Bosniak men and boys fled Srebrenica in an attempt to survive the genocide. Beginning on the 8th of July from the village of Nezuk, we will walk 100km over three days, arriving in Srebrenica on the evening of the 10th, in time to attend the mass funeral prayer on the 11th of July, where newly-identified victims will finally be laid to rest at the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial-Cemetery.
I will be marching with the Bosnia Trust, a UK-based charity dedicated to alleviating poverty and suffering in Bosnia through sustainable, community-led projects, including purchasing cows to support sustainable livelihoods and empowering families through the greenhouse project. The money I raise will go directly to their Widows Project - supporting women who lost husbands, brothers, and sons during the genocide. Many of these women, known as the Mothers of Srebrenica, now live alone in isolated areas in Republika Srpska, carrying an unimaginable weight of trauma.
My travel costs are self-funded, and every donation made will help fund the Widows Project. This Widows Project funds the employment of a counsellor who supports the mental health and well-being of these widows through specialised services, including individual and group counselling. Support can also include recruiting befrienders and domestic helpers to provide companionship and practical assistance to the widows, many of whom live alone in isolated areas. In addition, seasonal support such as providing seeds to grow your own vegetables with the necessary tools (fertiliser, watering cans, etc.).
My fundraising target is £3,000. I have wanted to honour the memory of the Srebrenica victims in this way for a long time. Please give whatever you can (really, no amount is too small).
May the martyrs of Srebrenica live among us forever. May we always remember the victims of the Bosnian genocide and provide ease and comfort in the hearts of the survivors. Ameen.
